The book every autism and special-needs parent wishes existed when their journey began. It's all about what to expect when you're expecting complex needs as a parent or ally.
A deeply honest guide to navigating skills, grief, systems, resilience, and rebuilding your life while raising a child with complex needs.
*Launching June 2026

When Michelle Boshard’s son Aaron was diagnosed with autism, she thought the hardest part would be parenting.
She was wrong.
The real challenge was navigating the systems around him — schools, medical care, disability services — while holding together a family, a career, and her own mental health.
Over two decades Michelle documented the invisible journey special needs parents walk: the grief over lost expectations, the strength required to keep going, and the profound love that makes it all worthwhile.
Life Cycle of a Special Needs Parent turns that journey into a roadmap for other families.
A guide for the people living — and supporting — the reality of special needs parenting.
Raising a child with complex needs and looking for guidance, validation, and practical strategies for the journey ahead.
Trying to understand what the future might hold and how to navigate the early stages of the journey.
Parents who have lived this experience for years and want language, perspective, and tools that reflect their reality.
Those who want to better understand the emotional and practical realities of supporting a family with complex needs.
Educators, therapists, social workers, and advocates who want deeper insight into the caregiver experience.
If you have ever wondered whether anyone truly understands this journey, this book was written for you.
A practical (and funny) guide to the emotional, relational, and systemic realities of raising a child with complex needs — and how to build a sustainable life alongside caregiving.
Learn to recognize the stages parents experience — from diagnosis and survival mode, to school years and surviving puberty, to advocacy, adaptations, and personal renewal in empty nesting.
Understand how to advocate effectively within schools, healthcare, and disability services so your child receives the support they need.
Develop strategies to prevent caregiver burnout while maintaining stability in your personal life, work, and financial future.
How to support and discover ways to nurture the emotional wellbeing, identity, and resilience of siblings growing up alongside disability.
Prepare for the transition to adult services and long-term planning so your child is supported throughout their life — even when you can no longer provide care yourself.
Learn how to connect with other caregivers, access meaningful support, and build the relationships that make long-term caregiving sustainable.

Across education, healthcare, and disability services, parents often become the coordinators, advocates, researchers, and crisis managers for their children — while trying to hold together their own health, relationships, and livelihoods.
Life Cycle of a Special Needs Parent brings visibility to this hidden reality and offers a framework that helps families understand the stages of the journey and how to build sustainable support systems over time.
This book is part of a broader effort to bring more resources, community, and practical tools to caregivers through the ParentDashboard initiative.

As a biologist, Michelle was trained to study life cycles and systems. As a parent of a child with complex needs, she found herself living in a complex ecosystem of services — and began mapping the stages special needs parents experience through their child's life cycle, but are rarely taught to expect.
For more than two decades, Michelle has navigated the realities of raising a now adult with severe non-verbal autism while working, advocating, and managing the many invisible responsibilities that special needs parents carry. Her journey with her son Aaron has taken her through fragmented and difficult systems that can be for families to navigate. And her son fell through every crack, so she can tell you about them all.
She is the founder of ParentDashboard, a social purpose initiative focused on helping families build sustainable support networks and access meaningful resources for long-term caregiving. Branded as The Natural Entrepreneur, she runs Vancouver Island Social Media helping online service providers develop their online offers and events.
Life Cycle of a Special Needs Parent combines Michelle’s lived experience, systems thinking, and advocacy to help caregivers understand the stages of the journey and build a life that supports both their child and themselves.
Life Cycle of a Special Needs Parent is more than just a book.
